The Magic Slate is a slate allowing to store images of any kind, and in no time at all. These slates are given as rewards for completing a specific test in the School of Magic.
Twinsen receives the Magic Slate from the Mentor of the School of Magic, after completing the Dome of the Slate test as part of his studies in the School of Magic. With this slate, Twinsen is able to store particular images that he finds important enough to be recorded as he goes about in his journey.
The slate comes in handy especially for storing maps. After making record of a map, Twinsen can look at the Slate and use it to examine various locations that are on it. Some examples of maps that end up being stored into the Magic Slate are the map of the Dome of the Slate, the Sewers of Citadel Island and the Emerald Moon base.
Using the slate is not a compulsory part of the game, although it can come in handy in some points.
